Kind Ambition:
Practical Steps

to Achieve Success
 Without Losing Your Soul

Kind Ambition is about you having the tools to slide over to the driver’s seat of your own life.  Circumstances will always be changing, seemingly thwarting our plans, but we don’t have to be  thrown around by them. You can be in charge of your choices and actions more than you might imagine - yet.

Kind Ambition is written for you, as a practical guide you can use right now.  It is a collection of  insights and actions designed to help you move forward and get more out of your life at home and at work.  The chapters hold to a formula of first giving you a new way to look at things, then offering you tangible Action Steps to try them out, and finally some things to notice when you do.

Conscious Communication: bringing communication up from "auto-pilot" and reactive, to thoughtful, responsive, and above all, intentional.

In utilizing your natural resources (The Treasure Trove Within) to further yourself in life, it’s imperative to your success that you are looking in the right treasure chest. Using someone else’s natural resources won’t work.

This month’s article was inspired by the number of people I’ve helped recently to properly assess their type on the Enneagram (the lens through which we see the world around us, take in, and sort stimuli). The consequences of being mis-typed by yourself or anyone else are at the least time-wasters, and potentially self-defeating.

When accurately assessed, knowing our typology opens many doors. We know what natural resources we have to work with, we know our fixations, our motivations, our drivers, our stumbling blocks, and most of all, we have the ability to raise unconscious compulsions to consciousness. Once there, these compulsions are powerless, except by conscious choice, and this gives us back the power.

Really knowing your type gives you a clear path - your clear path – to growth and development. It also illuminates our individual linguistics, or how we communicate with ourselves and each other. This can change our relationships on a level that is mind-blowing.

So why is accurate typing so difficult? There are many reasons, but the one common element that recurred throughout last month’s client assessments was a lack of depth. Character traits can look identical on the surface, but be driven by very different motivations. The difference between being a nurturing, giving, helpful person because it’s part of your internal concept of how a person should be, and doing it because of some unknown internal need is the difference between types in completely different triads.

So how can you increase the accuracy of your assessment, and get Optimized Results from knowing your type? There are three very important things to keep in mind while doing any Enneagram assessment.

1. Everyone Reflects Every Type
We all embody all Nine Types, but one Type is your primary core lens. If you threw a rubber ball into a box, it would likely bounce off of every wall, but it would hit one wall first. That would be your Primary Type. From there, we are an amalgam of Five Types: your Primary, your two adjacent Wings, (which have differing levels of influence) your lens in Stress, and your lens in Security. These all exert their influence in fluid and dynamic ways depending upon life circumstances, and your own blend is what makes you unique, yet allows for deeply shared experience.

2. Age and Experience – Think of yourself as you were at age 25 or younger.
As we progress through our lives, we take on and learn coping strategies from those around us. We are sort of like a giant snowball rolling downhill picking up more and more snow, and yet that core in the very center (which is still you) hasn’t changed. It can be hard to sort out what your own original strategies are unless you place yourself at the age before this process got under way. If you are 25 or younger this is a breeze, but for many of us it’s kind of a stretch. This is the age that most people really take their original coping strategies “on the road,” and the “cross-contamination” that can confuse the assessment usually begins.

3. Motivation not Behavior – Don’t focus on what you do. Focus on why you do it.
The real magic of the Enneagram is how it addresses who you are on a much deeper level than defining yourself by what you do. You and I could do the exact same thing for completely different reasons, thus the behavior itself doesn’t tell us nearly as much. As I mentioned earlier, if you like to help people, it could be because it's "the right thing to do," or because it fits your internal image of yourself to be that way, or it could be a knee-jerk compulsion that you don't even think about. Every type has its own relationship to everything. An Eight wants the information that will keep her on top, where a Six wants the information that will keep him safe. A Two wants information that will help connect him to others, where a One wants the correct information presented in a clean and neat manner. Three wants the information that will help him win, and Five wants as much information as she can get, period. So you can see how it's not about wanting information; it's about why you want it.

There are many Enneagram Assessments on the Web (including mine) for you to experiment with, but please don’t rush the judgment. If the type description doesn’t fit you, an inaccurate assessment can do more harm than good. My FAQ page may help with some of your questions if you get stuck, and if there is still confusion, please contact me. You having access to your own Treasure Trove will catapult you forward in life, and helping you do that is my mission.
